What Is Famanon?

Families Anonymous is a world-wide collaboration of family and friends who have been hurt due to somebody else's abuse of mind-altering substances or behavioural problems. Different Fam Anon member groups in various locations across the county meet frequently. Even if there is only a suspicion of a problem, any concerned individual is deeply encouraged to attend the meetings.

Fam Anon was established by a group of families in America in 1971. They started their first group in London in 1980, and now around 50 groups are working in different areas of the country.

Fam Anon fellowship member groups are self-help organization that run 12 Steps and 12 Traditions programs founded on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.

How Can It Help?

Fam Anon groups provide a platform for members to share drug and alcohol abuse concerns, learn from encouragement and experience from group members' in dealing with the delicate issue of challenges of family member's addiction. Group members learn how to adjust, cope, encourage and support loved ones under the influence of addiction.

The broader mean of helping family and friends simply implies helping them in critical situation in drug and liquor addiction.

Members adopt an honest and consistent approach towards the addict by attending meeting. Sharing of concerns and difficulties stirs individuals in the group to take a stand against drugs.

A self-help world-wide fellowship of families and friends of drug users and those with behavioural problems is Families Anonymous (FamAnon). In 1971, Fam Anon was founded in UK by a group of Los Angeles families based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholic Anonymous. In 1980, the first group in this country started in London and now in various parts of the UK there are some 50 groups.

The major aim of this group is to handle and help people especially families and friends who have drugs issues. It provides ways for these individuals to find a sense of serenity and to put their lives back together.

Families Anonymous works in so many ways. Its core strength originates from sharing of general issues. No fee is required for membership or meetings. Fam Anon solely depends on internal resources to run its program activities. The Fam Anon workers are volunteers, and the organisation gathers money through voluntary donations received at gatherings and by the sale of Fam Anon books.
